Ever since the launch of POCARI SWEAT, Otsuka Pharmaceutical has been advocating the importance of hydration and electrolytes in a variety of daily activities. The company conducts educational events for people of all ages, from children to seniors, and has engaged in efforts to raise awareness on the prevention and treatment of heat disorders for over 25 years. Specifically, Otsuka Pharmaceutical employees visit sites to give seminars on the importance of hydration and electrolyte replenishment based on scientific research at Otsuka Pharmaceutical research institutes and elsewhere. These activities have been expanded to include educating athletes, coaches, construction workers, factory workers, staff employed in hot environments, the elderly, and other people at risk of heat disorders throughout Japan. Moreover, in 2016, Otsuka Pharmaceutical and Otsuka Foods support COOL CHOICE, a national movement sponsored by the Japanese government to encourage decisions to mitigate global warming concerns. Additionally, Otsuka works to publicize prevention and treatment of heat disorders by providing support at high-school tournaments and other summer sports events, and also by working with local governments to develop and distribute posters and leaflets.
In recognition of the nationwide nature and large scale of these diverse activities, Otsuka Pharmaceutical was honored with a Heat Illness Prevention - Communication Project Hitosuzumi Award in 2016.*
The company was named Best Communicator for the third consecutive year and received a Top Runner Award (Private Sector), presented to the organization that implemented the most effective heat disorder prevention initiatives among all of the award-winning organizations. In line with its commitment to helping people maintain and improve their health, Otsuka Pharmaceutical will continue to raise awareness of the importance of hydration in all respects, including electrolytes and with regard to prevention of heat disorders in the face of global warming and other environmental changes, aging societies, and exercising safely.
Otsuka Pharmaceutical Factory supports and cooperates with the Committee for Awareness of Hidden Dehydration, which works to raise awareness of ways to prevent and treat dehydration before it becomes critical. Heat disorders occurs when heat is not released and builds up in the body. This phenomenon is closely tied to a lack of proper hydration. In the past, dehydration was commonly treated by administering liquids, but today it is increasingly common to treat mild to moderate dehydration with an oral rehydration solution early on to prevent milder cases from becoming serious. Efforts to raise awareness of oral rehydration solutions have increased recognition and understanding of heat disorders, and the Japanese Association for Acute Medicine has included OS-1 as a recommended oral rehydration solution in their treatment guideline. Otsuka Pharmaceutical Factory will continue to support the activities of the Committee for Awareness of Hidden Dehydration to raise awareness of the issue and prevent dehydration by promoting proper hydration, including replenishment of electrolytes.
At Otsuka Techno, forklift operators work outdoors moving products, and warehouse managers are in charge of heat disorder prevention efforts. The company distributes Japan Industrial Safety & Health Association pamphlets on prevention of heat disorders and works on raising awareness and understanding of heat disorder prevention.
The EN Otsuka Pharmaceutical Hanamaki and Kitakami factories in Japan communicate the dangers of heat disorders to employees, as well as to outside vendors working at the factories, frequently reminding workers to rehydrate. Between June and September, POCARI SWEAT dispensing machines are installed at both factories so that employees can hydrate as needed during the hottest months of the year.
Otsuka Pharmaceutical (H.K.) works with the Early Psychosis Foundation (EPISO), an organization that provides support to those with mental illness. EPISO members include psychiatrists from university hospitals, professors at the University of Hong Kong, social workers, volunteers and others. The organization engages in activities designed to provide a better understanding of those with mental illness and operates yoga and running programs with the aspiration to promote better health through exercise. To support these activities and ensure that the EPISO program is beneficial to all, Otsuka Pharmaceutical (H.K.) educates the doctors and volunteers on the importance of hydration and ways of hydrating and replenishing electrolytes. Otsuka Pharmaceutical (H.K.) is involved in both pharmaceutical and nutraceutical fields and will continue to use its knowledge and experience in both areas to contribute to people’s health.
* As part of the Heat Illness Prevention Communication Project, a public/private initiative under the auspices of the Ministry of the Environment, the Hitosuzumi (Cool Break) Awards are given to recognize outstanding initiatives to prevent heat disorders.

In response to a request from Tokushima Naruto Uzushio High School—a designated Super Nutrition Education School under a project introduced by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology—we held a seminar titled “Honing Your Sense of Food – Understanding Physical Changes through Nutrition and Sports” for students aiming to become top athletes. The seminar focused on issues related to nutrition, diet, and health management and the relationship between food and sports. We followed this with a meal for the students in our company cafeteria. The students conveyed how impressed they were with how delicious a nutritionally balanced meal can be.
