Otsuka Pharmaceutical believes that each and every Otsuka employee should be able to work enthusiastically and be in the best of health. The company encourages employees to take charge of their own health and has organized workplaces so as to transform them into worker-friendly environments where employees can do so. To promote the maintenance and improvement of the health of everyone, the company is further developing a better workplace environment to support, maintain and enhance health. Specifically, employees 30 and older receive free medical checkups, and employees and their families have access to health seminars and programs augmented by the company’s healthcare knowledge base. Top management issued a Health Declaration to further promote employee health improvement activities in January 2017.
In recognition of its diverse efforts to support employee health, Otsuka Pharmaceutical was recognized in February 2017 as a Certified Health and Productivity Management Organization (large enterprise category: White 500)*.

* Health and Productivity Management Organization Recognition Program organized by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in Japan and the Nippon Kenko Kaigi (Japan Health Council) that identifies large corporations and small-to-medium-sized enterprises that practice a high level of health and productivity management. Five hundred companies expect to be certified by 2020.

Taiho Pharmaceutical: TOKYO WORK CIRCLE PROJECT*

As a company committed to developing treatments for several types of cancer, Taiho Pharmaceutical aims to create a workplace where employees can continue working even during treatment for cancer and other diseases. The company provides employees with the necessary assistance through the Cancer Patient Employment Support Team formed by the Human Resources Department and industrial nursing staff. Additional measures include extended leave periods for employees with cancer, and a reemployment (return to work) system. It streamlined a system for work styles that enables employees with cancer to focus on their treatment.
In February 2016, the company was recognized with an excellence award from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government under a program that recognizes companies with outstanding initiatives that help employees remain employed while undergoing cancer treatment.

Otsuka Techno: AED course

The Otsuka group offers various health programs and consultation services to promote employee health. The group companies offer health consultation by telephone for employees and their families, and distribute health newsletters. It also provides mental health counseling, stress management training, and training for managers on recognizing and managing mental health issues in employees; mental and physical health management is actively promoted. In addition, to help prevent occupational injuries, the group also focuses on various types of training for emergency situations and traffic safety.
Otsuka Holdings holds health seminars for employees and their families, which draw on knowledge gained from its business activities. The aim of these efforts is to create more supportive work environments that encourage working women to understand and monitor their health, especially to be mindful of changes in hormonal balance.
Taiho Pharmaceutical conducts educational activities for employees, such as organizing lunchtime seminars on cancer screening and distributing related booklets to all employees. The employee cafeteria of the Tokushima Plant strives to promote health awareness on a daily basis. It shares seasonal eating tips for heath improvement using tabletop sign holders. In addition, workshops on cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use of automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) are regularly carried out in order to train employees in first aid emergency skills.
At Otsuka Pharmaceutical Factory, employee cafeterias are used to promote understanding and awareness concerning healthy diets and nutrition management. In addition to providing salad bars and nutritionally balanced meals rich in vegetables, the cafeterias also display the calorie and salt content for each item on the menu. The company has devised other ways to get more employees interested in healthy eating, such as placing information cards on cafeteria tables, outlining health facts and recommendations for balanced diets of protein, fat, and carbohydrates.
The main sites of EN Otsuka Pharmaceutical are located in the cities of Hanamaki and Kitakami, in Iwate Prefecture, regions which get a lot of snow in winter. Many employees there drive to work. To ensure they can commute securely while fulfilling their responsibilities for road safety, both sites inspect employee vehicles each year before the first snowfall to ensure that winter tires have been installed. The initiative has been successful, and there were zero employee injuries from commuter traffic accidents in 2016.
The Shiga Plant of Otsuka Electronics is focusing on measures to prevent metabolic syndrome by raising employee awareness of good eating habits and recommending the office exercise program. In 2016, a speaker from Otsuka Pharmaceutical gave a health seminar on the theme of obesity, diet and exercise.
Otsuka Techno has installed AEDs in its offices and factories and provides training on their use. Since 2013, wallet-size cards with instructions for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), issued by the Japan Medical Association, have been distributed to all employees with the aim of increasing emergency readiness. In addition, sports tournaments are held every spring and autumn as an employee health initiative. Training is provided for managers to help them understand employee mental health needs; 43 managers participated in fiscal 2016. As part of occupational safety, safe driving seminars are held three times a year in cooperation with police stations for employees who commute to work by car.

Otsuka Pharmaceutical: POCARI/fresh

Otsuka Pharmaceutical carries out various health education and physical fitness programs aimed at raising employee health awareness, and maintaining and promoting health. The POCARI/fresh exercise program was begun in 2007. An instructor visits each office once a week and leads the employees in an invigorating eight-minute workout they perform near their desks. The theme of the workout changes each time, and can include things such as shoulder stretches and brain-stimulation exercises. Today, the program continues at the Tokyo and Osaka headquarters and in the Tokushima area, which has also led to improved business efficiency. Going forward, the company will continue to provide opportunities for employee fitness and exercise.
