Otsuka Pharmaceutical (H.K.): Running program

Ever since the launch of POCARI SWEAT, Otsuka Pharmaceutical has been carrying out educational events for all ages, children to seniors, which advocate the importance of hydration and electrolytes for various types of daily activity. The company has also engaged in efforts to prevent and treat heat disorders for over 25 years. Company employees visit sites to give seminars on the importance of hydration and electrolyte replenishment based on scientific research at Otsuka Pharmaceutical research institutes and elsewhere. These activities have been expanded to include educating athletes, coaches, construction workers, factory workers, staff employed in hot environments, the elderly, and other people at risk of heat disorders. Moreover, through these seminars on sites by employees, the company supports activities for wider adoption of COOL CHOICE, a national movement sponsored by the Japanese government to encourage wise decisions for global warming. In addition, in summer, the company engages in support activities at sports tournaments such as the Inter-High School Championships and activities in collaboration with local governments to create and distribute posters and booklets as publicity for the prevention and treatment of heat disorders. Going forward too, the company will continue to contribute to maintaining and improving the health of people through educational activities on the importance of hydration in a variety of life situations, including responses to environmental changes such as global warming and the aging society and treatment of heat disorders in order to continue exercising safely, etc.
Otsuka Pharmaceutical Factory supports and cooperates with the Committee for Awareness of Hidden Dehydration, which works to raise awareness of ways to prevent and treat dehydration before it becomes critical. Heatstroke occurs when heat is not released and builds up in the body. This phenomenon is closely tied to a lack of proper hydration. In the past, dehydration was commonly treated by administering liquids, but today it is increasingly common to treat mild to moderate dehydration with an oral rehydration solution early on to prevent milder cases from becoming serious. Efforts to raise awareness of oral rehydration solutions have increased recognition and understanding of heat disorders, and the Japanese Association for Acute Medicine has included OS-1 as a recommended oral rehydration solution in their treatment guideline. Going forward Otsuka Pharmaceutical Factory will continue to support the activities of the Committee for Awareness of Hidden Dehydration to encourage appropriate hydration, including electrolytes, leading to greater knowledge and prevention of dehydration.
At Otsuka Techno, forklift operators work outdoors moving products, and warehouse managers are in charge of heat disorder prevention efforts. The company distributes Japan Industrial Safety & Health Association pamphlets on prevention of heat disorders and works on raising awareness and understanding of heat disorder prevention.
The EN Otsuka Pharmaceutical Hanamaki and Kitakami factories in Japan communicate the dangers of heat disorders to employees, as well as to outside vendors working at the factories, frequently reminding workers to rehydrate. Since fiscal 2013, between June and September, POCARI SWEAT servers are installed at both factories, and they are provided free of charge so that employees can rehydrate easily. They are highly appreciated by the employees.
Furthermore, the company is offering education on the importance of hydration, including electrolytes, overseas as well. Otsuka Pharmaceutical (H.K.) works with the Early Psychosis Foundation (EPISO), an organization that provides support to those with mental illness. EPISO members include psychiatrists from university hospitals, professors at the University of Hong Kong, social workers, volunteers and others. The organization engages in activities designed to provide a better understanding of those with mental illness and operates yoga and running programs with the aspiration to promote better health through exercise.  To support these activities and ensure that the EPISO program is beneficial to all, Otsuka Pharmaceutical (H.K.) educates the doctors and volunteers on the importance of hydration and ways of hydrating and replenishing electrolytes. Otsuka Pharmaceutical (H.K.) is involved in both pharmaceutical and nutraceutical fields and will continue to use its knowledge and experience in both areas to contribute to people’s health.
Additionally, in South Korea, the number of people complaining of symptoms such as heat disorders and dehydration due to extreme heat is increasing and Dong-A Otsuka has communicated the importance of maintaining the fluids and electrolyte balance in the body through appropriate hydration.
In addition, Otsuka Sims in China is conducting activities for a variety of people including parents and children.

EN Otsuka Pharmaceutical: Raising awareness of women’s health

The average lifespan in Japan, which is over 80 years old for both men and women is top class in the world. By contrast, the average for healthy life expectancy, during which the elderly are not bedridden or require home nursing care, is approximately nine years lower for men and 12 years lower for women than their respective life expectancies*. Extending healthy life expectancy is a matter of great importance in Japan. Similarly, Japan also faces the issue of creating an environment in which women can be active and involved in society while raising children, caring for aging parents, and maintaining their own health.
For many women, their professional and personal lives are disrupted along with their bodily rhythm and physical condition as they age. According to a survey, for example, respondents felt less positive about being promoted. The care received during and after the midlife transitional period, a time of significant physical and mental changes, has an impact on women’s healthy life expectancy. To help women stay healthy and beautiful during and after the midlife transitional period, Otsuka Pharmaceutical developed EQUELLE, a supplement containing equol made by lactic-aid bacteria from fermented soybeans.
The company also conducts seminars across Japan on women’s health that focus on the physical and mental changes that take place at each stage of life. The seminars also cover ways to lighten this transformational period that are suitable for each individual, so that women can lead full and active lives. In addition, the company released the results of its joint research on equol with Kindai University Research Institute of Oriental Medicine and continues to focus on ways of improving women’s quality of life.
In addition to information on women’s nutrition available to the general public on its website, Otsuka Pharmaceutical provides support for Otsuka group employees such as seminars on women’s health to help female employees consider and manage their own health needs.

Supporting the Pink Ribbon Campaign

Supporting the Pink Ribbon Campaign

The Pink Ribbon campaign is a worldwide effort to raise awareness on, distribute accurately information about, and promote early detection and treatment of breast cancer. Since 2006 Taiho Pharmaceutical has been supporting the Pink Ribbon campaign, with a particular focus on the Pink Ribbon Month of October, as part of its social contribution activities. In 2017 the company expanded those activities and conducted educational activities about Pink Ribbon throughout the year.
As one of those activities, the company created Pink Ribbon Pocket Tissues to educate many people about the Pink Ribbon campaign. They were placed in the receptions at the Taiho Pharmaceutical Head Office (main building and annex) and the Tokushima Plant so that visitors could take them freely. They were distributed to plant visitors at the Okayama Plant and the Kitajima Plant and to the Otsuka group employees and their families staying at the Amagi Mountain Villa.
Furthermore, the company strongly promoted Pink Ribbon Month. For example, in conjunction with Pink Ribbon Day on October 1, the Kitajima Plant presented the customary illumination in which it colored the water treatment facility pink, and in addition it newly installed an illumination of LED lights creating a border in the shape of the Pink Ribbon on the lawn inside the plant.
Moreover, the company co-sponsored the Pink Ribbon Symposium (sponsored by the Japan Cancer Society and the Asahi Shimbun) again in 2017. The symposium has the objective of communicating information about the latest treatments for breast cancer, ways of dealing with cancer, and mental health care. On October 1 the company opened a booth at the Tokyo venue. Seven hundred and fifty participants and 16 media companies gathered at the venue, and the audience showed even greater interest in breast cancer than previously. The 2017 theme was “If we support each other we will gain courage―The latest breast cancer treatment and mental health care.” The symposium featured talks by three specialists and actress Kaho Minami, and the audience listened attentively. Visitors to this company’s booth received Pink Ribbon stickers and a leaflet entitled Don’t Miss these Signs of Cancer! with information on early detecting of breast and other cancers, as well as an Aid Crew (first-aid kit) containing adhesive plasters with a Pink Ribbon design. The first-aid kit was selected in an employee survey as the most appropriate item for raising awareness. The company hopes that these goods will motivate more women to think about early detection and lead to more people receiving treatment.
Today, it is estimated that one in 11 women* in Japan will develop breast cancer. Taiho Pharmaceutical will continue to widely support the Pink Ribbon campaign to help ensure that as many women as possible receive support when they need it.

Otsuka Health Comic Library

Otsuka Holdings published the Otsuka Health Comic Library Volume 4 “Do you know your own body? A medical examination is a growth check” in February 2017. In response to the change to the medical examination items in elementary schools in fiscal 2016, this volume presented a story focused on medical examinations. It describes what can be known from medical examinations and measurement of physical fitness and what kinds of things we should notice in daily life. in ways that are easy for children to understand. In particular, regarding the musculoskeletal system (bones, joints, muscles, etc.) newly added to the test items, it is designed so that unfamiliar words can be understood as a part of daily life, by presenting simple stretching methods and playing outside.
The Health Comic Library was first published in 1989 to get children to deepen their interest in and understanding of how their bodies work and their health. It is produced with the cooperation of the Japan Medical Association, the Japan Society of School Health, the Japan Pediatric Association, etc. and is donated to approximately 23,000 elementary schools and libraries nationwide every year. Furthermore, it mentions the content of the school curriculum, so it is used not only as reading materials for the children but also as teaching materials for science and health classes, etc.
In fiscal 2013, it was reconceived as a “child participation-type” library incorporating pictures and posters, etc. about health drawn by children. Due to this, the library also became an opportunity for children to think about their bodies and health, and it became possible to utilize the library as an output destination for health education. The comics are posted on the website in e-books (77 volumes), so anyone can read them and put them to use in a variety of situations such as health education in households, etc., and in addition it is possible to browse examples of utilization of the library and the works created by the children. In collaboration with the Japan Society of School Health, Otsuka Holdings has held health education workshops for elementary school nurses and other school officials since 2015 to promote heath education using the Otsuka Health Comic Library.

Thinking of Having A Child. Medical advances in recent years have made cancer more curable than ever before and long-term survival possible.

Taiho Pharmaceutical is developing and providing various materials that can be used by medical professionals to assist cancer patients.
The company supports the activities of Orange Clover whose aim is to help cancer patients undergoing medical treatment to live an energetic life. Under the supervision of the Orange Clover program, Taiho Pharmaceutical distributed its “20 - TWENTY” booklet in 2016. This booklet was produced for mainly adolescents and young adults undergoing cancer treatment, as well as for their family and friends. The booklet is distributed to medical professionals in the expectation that it might offer useful tips to help patients deal with worries about their appearance (skincare, hair loss, etc.), as well as generate positive patient feelings and help them address various issues in their day-to-day lives. We hope to contribute even modestly to support patients in their battle with cancer by having medical professionals such as nurses review the booklet.
Also, in 2017 under the supervision of the working group on fertility conservation at the Cancer Institute Hospital of the Japan Foundation for Cancer Research, Otsuka published the Handbook of Fertility Conservation for Cancer Patients – Thinking of Having A Child. Medical advances in recent years have made cancer more curable than ever before and long-term survival possible. Similarly, fertility conservation technology is also improving. Through this booklet we want patients to know that there remains hope for childbirth in the future by having them learn about fertility conservation before they start treatment. With this knowledge in mind, we anticipate that they can undergo treatment they are satisfied with.

Activities for medical professionals

As Japan’s society continues to age and in light of the need for pharmacies that are capable of maintaining and improving people’s health based on their strong ties with local communities, Otsuka Pharmaceutical, in collaboration with the NPO Healthy Aging Projects for Women (HAP), launched a program in April 2017 to assist pharmacies offering multi-faceted healthcare support. The program goes by the name Otsuka Advanced Training for Healthy Aging Supporters, or OATHAS.
A government scheme of “Health Support Pharmacy”1 was launched in 2016 with the purpose of strengthening the functions of pharmacies as community-based centers of health-related information so they can actively assist the independent efforts of local residents who seek to maintain and improve their health. For this reason, Otsuka Pharmaceutical created the OATHAS program for pharmacies and people working in the medical profession, like pharmacists, to meet their need for acquiring greater knowledge and know-how as they go about providing health support to patients and local residents. Our first round of activities involves a learning program for acquiring basic health information and knowledge about diet and nutrition—essential for providing multi-faceted health support to local residents—which aims to nurture “women’s health supporters.” Other activities include the development of front desk support tools for use when engaging in health counselling, scientific evidence-based reliable product and health information, and support for the events held in cooperation with local communities.
In the dental field too, EN Otsuka Pharmaceutical is raising awareness about the importance of nutritional care by hosting seminars and posting information on its website.  The importance of nutrition in the dental field has gained increased momentum in the last few years. In the 2016 medical service fee revisions, a category for assessing integrated health and dental services was added for cases where a dentist (either from within or outside of the medical institution) makes up part of the nutrition support team. In the Deterioration of Oral Function in the Elderly, the position paper from the Japanese Society of Gerodontology in 2016, it was demonstrated that oral functionality and nutrition are tightly related and that it is important to quickly address oral frailty2 and the cycle of frailty3 whereby a decline in oral function leads to poor nutrition. In this environment, EN Otsuka Pharmaceutical is leveraging its dental field network and knowledge accumulated from its REFRECARE products to raise awareness of the importance of nutritional care in the dental field. The company also considers it important for ordinary citizens to gain an understanding of how to prevent poor nutrition and implement appropriate nutritional care before the onset of frailty. To that end, it has teamed up with Waves Japan to further ramp up its awareness campaign activities regarding the importance of preventing poor nutrition and implementing oral care.

*1 Pharmacies capable of facilitating the ongoing use of patients and supporting initiatives that assist the independent efforts of individuals to maintain and improve their health (Regulation for Enforcement of Pharmaceutical and Medical Devices Act of Japan).
*2 Deterioration in articulation, inability to eat cleanly, choking, and weak mastication owing to tooth decay and periodontitis caused by a decline in oral literacy and poor oral and denture care.
*3 A decline in mental and physical vitality (muscle and cognitive functions, etc.) associated with aging and heightened risk of dysfunctional lifestyle, nursing care requirements, or death.

Disseminating information and expanding lineup of products to assist oral ingestion
Tomomichi Ishii Manager, Product Planning Division
EN Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd.

As Japan’s society continues to age, more and more people are struggling to get enough nutrition from the mouth. In this environment, the Japanese government’s healthcare system is approaching this issue by taking oral ingestion into consideration. At the same time, the importance of the collaboration between the medical and dental professions has been pointed out in promoting the establishment of a comprehensive community care system. In light of this situation, EN Otsuka Pharmaceutical is developing, manufacturing, and selling products that assist the healthcare system’s goal of encouraging oral ingestion. Our lineup includes the REFRECARE series of oral care products, iEat eating recovery assisting food, and RACOL-NF SemiSolid for enteral use, which helps secure enough time for rehabilitation after a short period of gastrostomy administration. We will continue to keep an eye on trends in the healthcare system as we expand our lineup of necessary and useful products, and provide as much information as possible.”
